Walnut Street's Storefronts Have Been Changing in a Chain. Here's How the Moves Connect

Most of the change on Walnut Street since early 2025 traces back to a few big storefronts changing hands, and each move opened a space for the next one. Apple went into the old Gap. RH went into the old Banana Republic. Saatva is heading for the old Rite Aid next to Apple's former store. On the 5400 and 5500 blocks, nearly every recent sign change connects to another one a few doors away.

How fast each space refilled says a lot about how the street works. Some spaces were spoken for before the previous tenant left. One sat empty for about three years.

The swaps, address by address

This is the chain as reported by Pittsburgh outlets through August 2026.

Space Previous tenant New or announced tenant Status
5436 Walnut Gap Apple Opened Aug. 9, 2025
5508 Walnut Apple No tenant named in reporting Landlord in talks with several retailers, February 2025
Walnut and Ivy corner Banana Republic RH Opened Jan. 16, 2026
5514 Walnut Williams Sonoma Paris Baguette Opened December 2025
Former Rite Aid, next to old Apple Rite Aid Saatva Announced August 2026
5430 Walnut Amazing Books & Records Brandy Melville Slated for first half of 2026
5743 Walnut Georgie's Corner Cafe Commonplace Coffee Soft-opened June 22, 2026

The first domino fell in February 2025. Pittsburgh Magazine reported that Banana Republic would leave its 15,000-square-foot space at Walnut and Ivy. In the same report, Apple was moving from 5508 Walnut into the two-level former Gap space at 5436 Walnut, and the property's broker was already negotiating with two national retailers for the Banana Republic space. The broker told the Post-Gazette, as Pittsburgh Magazine recounted, that he saw the vacancy as "an opportunity to upgrade the current tenant mix on the street."

Apple's new store opened on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025, according to AppleInsider, and Apple's own store page lists it at 5436 Walnut Street. The negotiations for the Banana Republic corner ended with RH. Pittsburgh Magazine reported that RH Pittsburgh, The Gallery on Walnut Street opened Jan. 16, 2026, across four levels. It carries RH Interiors, RH Modern and RH Outdoor collections and includes an RH Interior Design studio.

Why some spaces filled in months and one took years

The Banana Republic space had been empty since March 2025 when RH opened in January 2026, roughly ten months later, according to the same Pittsburgh Magazine report. For a 15,000-square-foot space, that's quick, and a buyer was being lined up while the old tenant was still there.

The former Williams Sonoma at 5514 Walnut took longer. It sat vacant from the store's 2022 closing until Paris Baguette opened there in December 2025, about three years. In February 2025, Paris Baguette's signage was already up but no opening date had been announced, so even a confirmed tenant took most of a year to get from sign to open door.

Smaller spaces turned over faster. The same February 2025 report noted that two Pittsburgh-based shops, the lingerie store Cheeks and the women's boutique Madeleine George, had already moved into the former e.b. Pepper space.

On Walnut Street, the spaces that refilled fastest were the ones with a tenant lined up before the old one left.

Three spaces with open questions

That pattern is a useful lens for the three storefronts whose next chapter is still being written.

The former Rite Aid. TribLive reported on Aug. 4, 2026 that the New York-based luxury mattress company Saatva plans a showroom in the former Rite Aid on Walnut Street. It sits directly next to Apple's old location and across the street from Henne Jewelers and Kendra Scott. TribLive said the opening date was unclear, though a Saatva press release lists Pittsburgh under "2026 Openings." It will be Walnut Street's second store built for trying the product in person, after RH.

5508 Walnut. Apple's former store is the link in the chain with the least public detail. In February 2025, Pittsburgh Magazine reported that the landlord was in talks with several retailers to take the space once Apple moved. Its neighbor, the future Saatva, makes this the block where the next sign change is most likely to show up.

5430 Walnut. Amazing Books & Records closed its Walnut Street shop and committed to a return downtown, per the Pittsburgh Business Times. The Post-Gazette reported in December 2025 that Brandy Melville was expected to open there in the first half of 2026, and it would be the chain's first Pittsburgh store. That timeline has passed, so the storefront itself is the best check on where things stand.

Those three addresses, plus Apple at 5436 and Paris Baguette at 5514, put five of the street's changes inside a short walk. A shopper starting at Apple can pass the old Amazing Books space, the old Apple store, the future Saatva and Paris Baguette without leaving the 5400 and 5500 blocks.

The far end of the street is making things

Up at 5743 Walnut, the change of tenant brought something more than a storefront. Commonplace Coffee took over the former Georgie's Corner Cafe and soft-opened June 22, 2026, NEXTpittsburgh reported, adding that part of the company's bakery operation had moved into the city with it. The café moved its grand opening celebration to Aug. 1.

On Oct. 7, 2026, Commonplace announced Commonplace Kitchen, a new name for its scratch-made baked goods, breakfasts and lunch items, sold at all eight of its cafés. The release says most of the commercial kitchen and baking operations are now in the Shadyside café, with the original production space in Shelocta, Pennsylvania, still in use. So the coffeecake sold at Commonplace's other cafés is mostly baked on Walnut Street.

Commonplace is offering free samples through Sunday, Nov. 1, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, twice a day. Items include its coffeecake, chocolate chip cookies, breakfast burritos and breakfast sandwiches, though the company notes that times and items vary by location. On the street where the products are made, that covers every sampling day between now and Nov. 1.

What's on the Walnut Street calendar through December

The street's fall events are spread across its new and old addresses. Two of them are in spaces from the table above.
